13,026 students gave MIL papers in Meetei Mayek

Imphal, March 11 2015:
A record 13,026 students who chose Manipuri as their Major Indian Language subject used Meetei Mayek at this year's High School Leaving Examinations conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur.
Speaking at a press meet jointly organised by MEELAL and BoSEM at the latter's office at Babupura on Wednesday, Secretary of the BoSEM Chingambam Sarat stated that in comparison last year 11,820 candidates opted for Additional English as their MIL subject while another 1695 students went for Manipuri with Bengali script.
On the other hand, many students belonging to tribal communities chose among the ten recognized tribal languages, he stated while announcing that from next year Liangmei language will be available for selection as an MIL subject.
Further, beginning from the next year's HSL examination all students who chose Manipuri as their MIL subject will have to give their papers in Meetei Mayek as Bengali script will no longer be an option.
MEELAL's President Tomba Mangang said the successful replacement of Bengali script by Meitei Mayek in the state's school can be attributed to the common efforts put up by his organisation, the Chief Minister, ministers, MLAs and people of the state.
Meitei Mayek was first introduced in the syllabus for Class I in the 2006 .
On the other hand, Heingang MLA N Biren has announced a cash award of Rs 20,000 to the student who scores the highest mark in Manipuri using Meitei Mayek script.
