JCILPS strike puts life to grinding halt

Normal life in Manipur came to a grinding halt today on account of the 24-hour general strike called by Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) since last midnight demanding implementation of ILP system in Manipur, suspension of Additional SP Y.Victoria and unconditional release of arrested members of JCILPS, Though the strike was total in the four valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur with all the market places and business establishment remaining closed for the day and vehicular traffic staying of the road, normal life in the hill districts was also affected as all inter and intra district transport remained suspended for the day.
Schools, colleges and other academic institutions also down their shutters even though they were out of the purview of the general strike as there was no transportation service.
Attendance in the Government offices was also reported to be thin.

At many places supporters of JCILPS were also seen enforcing the strike by erecting road block with piling of woods, boulders and burning tyres.
The general strike affected normal life in Thoubal district as well with all shops and major market places including Thoubal Keithel, Yairipok Keithel, Wangjing Keithel remaining closed for the day and vehicles staying off the road.
JCILP supporters also enforced the strike at many places along the National Highway 102 passing through the district.
However, there was no report of any untoward incidents during the bandh.
District police also stepped up security measures in view of the general strike.
Supporting the cause of JCILPS, students of Kakching Khunou College along with local people of the area halted vehicular movement at Kakching Khunou in Thoubal district from 11 am to 3.40 pm today.
As conveyed by the Students' Union of Kakching Khunou College, although certain altercations developed between the strikers and the VDF personnel posted there, no untoward incident happened.
The general Strike under the banner of JCILPS was reportedly successful in Jiribam sub division of Imphal east district with the shops, educational institutions, government offices and banks remaining closed for the day.
Mention may be made here that the general strike has been called since last midnight against the alleged inappropriate behavior of Additional SP Yengkhom Victoria (Traffic, Imphal West) towards JCILPS members and arresting 12 members of the committee from their office on September 8 while they were in the midst of a meeting discussing the issue to be presented before the Chief Minister of for the proposed talk on Inner Line Permit (ILP) .
