Natural calamities form 3 new lakes

Imphal, August 10 2015: Massive landslides occurred in the Sanathong stream bank formed three water reservoirs which looked like huge lakes.

A team of media persons along with local residents of K Leihaoram and members of Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) visited at the area on Monday.

The villagers narrated that three huge water reservoirs were formed in the Sanathong River area due to landslides which occurred after heavy rains lashed parts of the State.

The first water reservoir was about 6 km away from the K Leihaoram Village and adjacent to Molphai Village while the second reservoir was 8 km away from the Leihaoram Village.

The villagers said that the last water formation is bigger than others and it is about to reach Sanathong (which is one of the historical sites of Manipur) .

Meanwhile, People of K Leihaoram were gripped by panic as they fear bursting of the reservoirs any time.

Speaking to media persons, K Leihaoram Village Authority Chairman Rockson Shimray sought Government's attention to take immediate measures on the issue.

Rockson said some of Molhai Villagers also vacated from their village fearing landslide.

The water is likely to affect many villages in Thoubal District like Somtunram, Tingarok, Nongpok Sekmai etc.

ICHAM President Boy appealed the Government to take up immediate preventive measures so as to avoid further destruction.
