Imphal, July 10 2014:
The Directorate of Fisheries celebrated the 14th Fish Farmers' Day 2014 here on Thursday.
A function was organized at the complex of the directorate in Lamphelpat and was participated by Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir as chief guest and Y Jugindro, Commissioner of Directorate of Fisheries as president.
Addressing the gathering, Y Jugindro said Manipur needs to scale up its fish productivity in order to meet the increasing demand.
He said the people of Manipur like fish very much, but the availability of fish in the State is now inadequate.
He pointed out that Norway is the largest fish producer in the world today and that a critical observation can be made as to why Manipur has been unable to produce sufficient fish.
The Department of Fisheries will approach the leaders of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and urge them to take steps towards increasing fish production in the State, Jugindro assured.
Those who want to rear fish can get loan from banks, he said, but added that it is unfortunate that most of the financial institutions in the State are now declining loan facilities to the fish farmers because there is no culture of repayment of the loan taken from the banks.
Jugindro also appealed to the fish farmers to widen the scope of their work to increase their products and export them to other States of the country.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the Fish Fair-Cum-Fish Crop Competition 2013 held as part of the 14th Fish Farmers' Day.
