Imphal, June 10 2021:
Left parties in the state on Thursday joined the opposition parties in the nationwide protest against administrator Praful Patel of Lakshadweep, imposition of Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation (LDAR) 2021 and his decision to legalise liquor in the UT by organising a sit-in protest at Irawat Bhawan here.
CPI Manipur State Council secretary L Sotinkumar said that since Praful Patel, a former minister in Gujarat government, became the administrator of Lakshadweep, people of the union territory are no longer feeling safe.
He had banned sale and consumption of beef in the UT, whose maximum population is Muslim while LDRA 2021 has paved way for land grabbing policies making the indigenous people of the UT vulnerable.
Moreover, the new Anti-Social Activities Act 2021 violates the essence of democracy by empowering the administrator to send anybody who raises voice against the administration to jail for one year without trial.
Around 93 civil servants had earlier urged the administrator to withdraw his policies and new regulations, he said.
Demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Praful Patel from the UT, he said that opposition parties will launch intense forms of agitation until the government fulfils their demands.
Mention may be made here that IAS or IPS officers were appointed as administrators of Lakshadweep in the past and Praful Patel is the only politician, who has been appointed to the post of administrator of the UT .
