Port Blair, July 08 2022:
The delegation of United Committee Manipur (UCM), which is currently in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on Friday offered floral tributes to the portraits of Manipuri martyrs at Mount Manipur National Park, and planted tree saplings brought by the delegation after seeking approval from the UT's forest department.
The 46.62 square kilometre Mount Harriet National Park, was renamed as Manipur Parvat National Park recently following the announcement made by union home minister Amit Shah on October 16, 2021 in honour of the 23 Manipuri martyrs, who were sent to the cellular jail located in the island by the British government.
The UCM delegation, which include its president Joychandra Konthouja, vice-president YK Dhiren, general secretary Ngangom Deba, IPR secretary Leisembam Lamabam and finance secretary Nongmaithem Jiban planted saplings of Heirangoi (Yellow Mangosteen), Tairel (Toona Ciliata/Red Cedar) and Yongchak (stink bean), which they brought from Imphal.
Later, they presented a portrait of King Kulachandra to the officer of the guest house located in the park for hanging on the wall.
Though the national park has been renamed into Manipur Parvat National Park, there is no display board explaining the reason behind renaming the national park.
As a result, no visitors are aware of the idea behind renaming of the national park.
Joychandra Konthoujam drew attention of the government to take up necessary measures for putting up a display board highlighting the reason behind the name Manipur attached to the national park.
The UMC president also urged the government to install statues of King Kulachandra and 22 other martyrs or a common monument to represent them in the national park and also to construct a guest house, for which the central government had already assured assistance.
Meanwhile, noting that there is no document or photo related with Manipuri martyrs in the library of the cellular jail, UCM general secretary Deba urged the state government to trace relevant documents for displaying in the library.
