Imphal, December 07 2017:
The Zeliangrong Youth Front has condemned the action of destroying bamboo bridges at four different locations in Jiribam by Jiribam police personnel .
A press release issued by president of ZYF stated that the bridges which were constructed over Jiri river connect several Zeliangrong villages located on both banks of Jiri river and Assam side .
It stated that the involved personnel destroyed the bridges with the aim of preventing the influx of immigrants into the State from Assam but without an alternative arrangement for the people which can be taken as curtailing the livelihood of the economically poor Zeliangrong people .
The Zeliangrong people depend entirely on the bridges as the people use the bridges to reach the nearest market places in Jiribam for business and trading and students also utilise the bridges to go to schools and educational institutions .
The decision of the State Govt to take up such drastic step, without informing or providing notice to the people, especially when the students are presently having their annual examinations, is a violation of human rights and right to education, it added .
It stated that the act of destructing the bridges as a pre-empt measure to curb influx of immigrants is not convincing while adding that it would greatly hinder the daily activities and loves of Zeliangrong people on both sides of the State.
It further stated that the senseless act would create a deep negative impact on the minds of the innocent students .
ZYF urged the State Government to rebuild the bridges so as to ease the hardship and difficulties of the people or arrange any alternative means including all time free boating transportation system.
