Committee flays PRIs listed for FC meet

Imphal, November 07 2024: Ad-Hoc Committee of All Manipur Elected PRIs of 2017 has denounced the list of 15 elective representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), for participation in the interaction programme with the 16th Finance Commission team on November 7 and 8 in a recent official letter sent by the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj director P Gojendro to the Finance Department (Expenditure Section) .

In a release, Committee president Pheiroijam Heramani Singh questioned legitimacy of the selection of the PRIs' representatives in the list.

It raised poser on the selection done by the director who subsequently forwarded the list of Panchayat Raj Institution (PRI) representatives to the finance department, citing government s failure to conduct the 6th General Panchayat Election for over two years after the 5th term expired.

Questioning the director where he was when several statements were made against the delayed Panchayat elections, which are already two years overdue, Heramani asked if it was wrong to inform the 16th Finance Commission that there are no PRI representatives, given that the elections are yet to take place.

"It would be better to put in efforts to ensure early conduct of the Panchayat elections, instead of indulging in such unjustified acts," he contended.
