Kakching, December 06 2024:
Internally displaced persons, who are staying in relief camps set up in Wangoo area after displacement from Kuki - dominated towns such as Serou, Sugnu, Tangjeng, Napat and Chakpikarong, have warned of launching hunger strike if their demand for safe return to their ancestral homes is not honoured by the government.
Speaking to news persons on the sidelines of a sit-in protest held at Wangoo Lupa Marup Keithel on Thursday, some protestors expressed readiness and eagerness to return to their place of origin rather than languish in the temporary accommodation facilities arranged by the government due to strain in familial ties and their children staring at uncertain future.
Stating that the government acknowledge their plight and reconstruct houses at their ancestral villages to facilitate family reunion, they threatened to resort to hunger strike in case authorities concerned undermine the demand for resettlement.
The sit-in participants also chanted slogans and held placards inscribed with messages/slogans such as 'We don't want to live in government - constructed temporary homes', 'End India's proxy war', 'We oppose Government of India's action', 'We will protect our own land', 'It's time for all to unite' and 'Facilitate return of IDPs back to ancestral homes' .
