Imphal, November 06 2024:
Alternative Theatre Group celebrated its 9th foundation day with a free medical camp at Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai community hall on Wednesday with Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur chairman Narendra Ningombam, social activist Dhanabir Laishram and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Sougrakpam Hemanta Singh as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Narendra Ningombam noted that as a performing artiste is closely related to the present and future of his/her motherland, one should try to instil the spirit of nationalism amongst the masses.
He continued that the various art forms could disappear if there were no artistes, adding that the loss of art forms would spell the end of a civilisation since art forms are part of the past, present and future.
Expressing remorse that the prevailing unrest situation has affected artistes of various art forms, forcing them to seek alternatives means of survival, Narendra commended the artiste community for their role in boosting morale of those volunteering to protect the state.
Though the conflict is causing distress to many, artistes should endeavour to bring about ideas that could become the eyes and ears of the land, he stressed, while remarking that the financial support of the government towards new productions would be of great help.
In his address, Sougrakpam Hemanta said that theatre makes the people aware of both positives and negatives of society, similar to doctors treating patients.
Theatre Group secretary Brahmacharimayum Roji, in her speech, noted that the theatre movement in the state has slowed down.
However, new artistes of the Group have been made aware about importance of this art form and as such, various plays have been performed till date.
There are many theatre enthusiasts the state, she said and stressed the need for reviving the decaying theatres in Manipur.
