Minister worried over increasing HIV cases in State

Imphal, June 04 2014: A one-day State level seminar on 'Women & Children with HIV: Economic-Psycho-Social Implication' organized by Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) was held today at the Conference Hall of Imphal Hotel here today.

The inaugural function of the seminar was attended by AK Mirabai, Minister of Social Welfare as Chief Guest; Dr L Ibetombi Devi, Chairperson of MSCW as President while O Landhoni Devi, MLA of Khangabok A/C as Special Guest of Honor and Th Joychandra Singh, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department as Guest of Honor.

Addressing the gathering, AK Mirabai stated that despite the efforts put in by the department and NGOs to combat spread of HIV/AIDS in the State, the number of HIV positive people is still increasing at an alarming rate.

She said that Manipur Aids Control Society (MACS) under NACO has been taking up various measures to bring HIV affected people to the mainstream.

Maintaining that the Ujala and Swadha scheme under Ministry of Women & Child has been implemented in the State covering both the hills and valley which aims at providing awareness and free medicines, the Minister said that an AIDS cell with nutrition support has already opened at JNIMS Hospital.

The seminar held in two technical sessions was also attended by Dr Aheibam Jayanta Kumar; Dr Ranbir Laishram, Prof & Head of Pediatric, RIMS; Dr Ng Brajachand Singh, Prof of Microbiology Department, RIMS and Khaidem Tulakanta Singh as Resource Persons.
