Imphal, February 03 2022:
Ahead of filing the nomination paper for the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election, all 54 candidates of the Indian National Congress (INC), whose names have been announced so far, took a joint pledge not to join any other political parties after winning the election.
On Thursday, Manipur election in charge Bhakta Charan Das led the INC candidates in taking the pledge at Kangla, MBC church in Chingmeirong, Lainingthou Sanamahi in 1 MR, Masjid in Babupara and Govindajee temple in Palace Compound.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhakta Charan Das remarked that a series of events in which one switched side after being elected in 2017 led to the MLAs losing the respect of the people.
On the other hand, BJP, by taking advantage of holding the power at the centre, tried to destroy the Congress-led governments in other states.
However, it must be noted that BJP forcefully formed the government using wrongful means, not with the consent of the people.
JD(U) has almost zero presence in the political scene of the state but BJP is making full use of the political party and others for their selfish interests, he said, adding that one should always remember the power of people's vote.
MPCC president N Loken said that the upcoming polls will decide the future of Manipur.
Thus, the people should not be influenced by the temporary glitter of BJP.
They should remember the false promises BJP made before the 2017 polls, he stated, while urging all to vote for Congress so as to ensure the formation of a Congress government.
Meanwhile, CLP leader and ex-CM O Ibobi contended that Congress strongly believes in secularism and in the Constitution.
However, it has become a trend in the state for an MLA to disregard the sentiments of the people who elected him/her in the first place and instead pursues selfish interest.
This is turn is threatening the very fabric of democracy.
Thus, as per the instructions of AICC leader Sonia Gandhi, the candidates took the pledge not to jump ship before the end of their term, at various important places of different religions in the state.
