SI shot dead in Jiri, JAC not to claim body

A Sub-Inspector of Manipur Police posted in Jiribam district to protect Mong-bung Meetei village was shot dead by a police constable on Saturday morning.
The deceased SI has been identified as Md Shah Jahan s/o (L) Ibomcha of Yairipok Tulihal under Yairipok PS .
The accused shooter has been identified as constable Akoijam Bikram s/o Akoijam Dhananjoy of Naharup Pangong Makhong of Porompat PS.
According to reports culled from the spot, the incident occurred at around 11 am Saturday at the outhouse (sanggoi) of a residence belonging to one N Noren in Mongbung Meetei village.
A police outpost had been set up at the residence for protecting the village.
As per one of the police personnel on duty, the deceased SI was seated in a chair in the outhouse when constable Bikram shot him.
The bullet hit him on the chest and exited through his back.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital but declared dead on arrival.
There had been no incident of any disagreement between the two, the personnel conveyed.
Subsequently, Jiribam police arrested Bikram and a case was registered to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, in response to the killing, a JAC was formed on Saturday, with the JAC refusing to claim Shahjahan's dead body until justice is delivered.
In connection with the incident, a press meet was held at the residence of the deceased Shahjahan's residence in Yairipok Toupokpi on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to newspersons, JAC convenor Makakmayum Faya Safar said that SI Shahjahan was posted as the post commander at the police outpost set up in Mongbung.
On Saturday at around 9.30am, he was shot dead at close range with a 303 rifle by a constable, who was also posted in the outpost, because he (Shahjahan) reprimanded the latter for not doing his duty properly despite being posted in the red zone.
Condemning the incident, Faya informed that a JAC against the cold-blooded killing of Shahjahan Sub-inspector Manipur Police Mongbung Police Outpost, Jiribam District was formed by all local clubs, organisations, senior citizens and Meira Paibi bodies of Yairipok Tulihal Toupokpi.
The JAC would be submitting a memorandum to CM Biren through local MLA Th Shyamkumar and will not claim the body until a meeting with the CM is held and the JAC's demands discussed.
