Protest demonstration to save Thoubal river

A protest demonstration was staged in front of Manipur High Complex by members of Thoubal River Conservation Committee today during which the protesters raised slogans to save Thoubal river, provide water to the agricultural land and as well as other demands by holding empty buckets and empty pots.
Speaking to media persons, convenor of the committee, Khumanthem Inaocha said that a PIL was filed before the High Court of Manipur on February 19.The committee comprises 35 local clubs and Meira Paibi associations and explained that today, there is a hearing regarding the said PIL.
The protest demonstration was taken out to highlight the grievances of the people staying nearby Thoubal river due to rock and sand quarrying works using heavy machineries, mostly in Assembly Constituency of Forest Minister Shyamkumar, he alleged.
Due to the said rock and sand quarrying works, the water of the river have turned extremely muddy, he said, adding that it is very unfortunate that the State Government has failed to look after the issue apart from failing to hear the voice of the people who depend on Thoubal river for their livelihood and agricultural purpose.
On the other hand, the Court today fixed the next date
of hearing of the PIL on July 9 .
