Imphal, June 02 2011:
With the people and civil societies concentrating on the issue concerning the territorial integrity of the state, the unchecked influx of non-Mainpuris is overpowering the indigenous people of the state day by day.
If the situation is allowed to continue, the indigenous people will vanish from the soil of Manipur, MLA RK Anand said, addressing a press conference at his residence today.
FRIENDS president Sapamcha Jadumani also attended the conference.
The MLA demanded that an Act for enforcement of the Inner Line Permit should be passed by the Assembly.
He had brought up the matter in the House of the state Assembly and will again bring it up for discussion, he added.
Expressing apprehension that one day the indigenous people will become extinct in the state, the MLA called for the support of all members of the House to press the government to enforce the ILP Act.
He explained that a 35% increase in the population of non-Manipuris has been detected from 1950 till date.
If the rate of increase is allowed to go on they will dominate the indigenous population in the next few years.
The unchecked influx of people from outside the state should not be be taken lightly.
The matter should be seriously considered by those who at present are concerned of the territorial integrity of the state.
Sapamcha Jadumani, speaking at the press conference, asserted that he had held consultations with some MLAs regarding the matter of enforcement of the Inner Line Permit.
There is the need of building a common platform among the different groups of indigenous people residing in the state.
He called for a concerted effort by all sections of society to find a way to save the indigenous people from vanishing from the soil of Manipur.
