Imphal, February 01, 2013:
Persisting with the demand for disclosing real identity of the individual(s) to whom the huge drug consignment, seized from Tulihal Airport, belong to, sit in demonstration was staged at Singjamei Keithel today.
The protest demonstration held from around 11 am till 3 pm was jointly organised by Singjamei Apunba Nupi Lup, Singjamei Keithel Apunba Nupi Lup and Singjamei unit of Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA).
While noting that psychotropic drugs worth crores of rupees were confiscated by a Special Investigation Unit (SIU) from the said airport on January 11, CADA Singjamei secretary L Ashakiran Devi demanded immediate revelation of the drugs' real owner and reactivate the SIU, which was disbanded hours after the huge drug seizure was made.
Expressing that the Govemment disbanding SIU and transferring its Officer in charge (OC) who led the operation, lack justification, she suggested that the Government recommend award for the SIU team.
Ashakiran also regretted that a number of precious lives have been lost to substance abuse and cautioned that the Government would be responsible in case more citizens are claimed by drugs.
Alleged attempt by the State authorities not to identify the real drug smuggler connected to the Tulihal Airport case is not only outrageous but demonstrates Government's lack of commitment to effectively tackle menace of drug abuse.
