Imphal, July 30 2013:
Even if the State Government has set this coming December as the target to complete construction of District Veterinary Hospitals in all nine districts of the State under Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR), the construction is unlikely to be completed within the target period due to slow work progress.
According to an official source, the construction of these District Veterinary Hospitals began after allocation of Rs.6 crores under NLCPR.
The hospitals are located at Mekola in Imphal West, Yorbung in Imphal East, Bishnupur District Headquarters, Athokpam in Thoubal, Modikhul in Chandel, Tuibong in Churachandpur, Lukhambi Village in Tamenglong, Green Land in Ukhrul and Christian Colony in Senapati district.
The veterinary hospitals have been constructed in view of providing better healthcare facilities to pets and other domesticated animals.
The lone Veterinary Hospital at Sanjenthong could not cater all the services to the public.
Moreover, the veterinary Centres across the State are almost defunct with lack of infrastructures and manpower.
Veterinary Department has a major role in combating epidemics among domesticated animals, which could also affect human beings.
Vaccination of animals must be a routine programme of Veterinary Centres, but the public has almost forgotten the existence of such Centres.
The District Veterinary Hospitals would be able to provide better veterinary healthcare services to the public, the source said.
It may be noted that the fund for construction of District Veterinary Hospitals has been shared between the Centre and State Government in the ratio of 90:10 .
