Ukhrul, August 26 2015:
As rain-triggered landslides continue to hit several roads in Phungyar Sub Division, Town Development Committee (TDC) Phungyar has fervently urged the State Government to take up immediate necessary measures towards improving the deplorable condition of Ukhrul-Phungyar road.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao over the phone, TDC Secretary Redeemer Siro informed that the said road is a lifeline for the residents of the subdivision which connects them to the rest of the district.
But it has been in a miserable shape owing to lack of repair since BRO/GREF left the area some two decades back.

"With no proper drainage system, the road surface had been filled with innumerable potholes throughout," he said while maintaining that in the aftermath of the recent series of landslides that hit the road, the conditions have further aggravated.
Stating that landslips have been wreaking havoc along the route since July 31 last, Siro said that over the past few days till Saturday rain had caused landslides in between Phungyar-Alang Junction, Shakok-Phalang and others.
Bulldozers had been pressed into work to clear the muck and land masses, he added.
"Deplorable roads in the area have endangered the lives of villagers.
We therefore urge upon the government to improve road connectivity and redress our sufferings without further delay" TDC said.
Phungyar-Shangshak road restored .
The Phungyar-Shangshak PWD road which was cut off following heavy landslides on July 31 night, has been restored and all inter-village passenger vehicles resumed service since 19 August last.
The Public Works Department, Phungyar Section undertook an intensive 15-day-long restoration operation.
A total of 15 locations spanning a stretch of 7 km along the route were ravaged by the massive landslides with the most severe one at a sharp turn where a road portion covering about 400 metres grievously slided 13 metres down the road surface, sources have said.
Sources said that a State PWD Phungyar section had worked from August 4 in the restoration exercise on a war footing for straight 15 days.
Meanwhile, locals of the subdivision have lauded the 43 Phungyar MLA Victor Keishing for despatching the quick response team to clear the debris and reconnected the area to the rest of the district in time.
