Imphal, July 24 2014:
The Manipur Legislative Assembly today decided to serve breach of privilege notices to noted human rights activist Babloo Loitongbam and local cable television Impact TV for allegedly making derogatory remarks against all the MLAs.
Moving the breach of privilege motion in the House, MLA I Ibohalbi from the opposition bench said that Babloo Loitongbam's disparaging remarks intended to hurt the dignity of all the 60 MLAs.
He said contempt of the House has been committed by the human rights activist.
In a television discussion programme "Manung Hutna" telecast by Impact TV channel, Babloo, who is the executive director of Human Rights Alert (HRA), reportedly dubbed all the 60 legislators of Manipur as "nasty people" who do not want to introduce Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Manipur.
Babloo also allegedly accused the legislators of attempting to give away Manipur to the non-Manipuris and denounced the MLAs as "contractors" who are doing nothing for the well-being of the public.
Opposition MLA Dr I Ibohalbi said activist Babloo Loitongbam has insulted all the MLAs, therefore it is imperative to take action against him and the editor of the private TV channel by serving breach of privilege notices.
MLA L Ibomcha said that the Manipur legislative assembly has already taken resolution twice on the ILP issue and it has been urging the Centre to implement the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act of 1873 in the state.
IFC Minister I Hemochandra termed the remarks by the human rights activist as a serious matter.
While calling it an insult to the legislators, he also demanded action against Babloo.
All the MLAs present in the House sought action against Babloo and Impact TV.
Later, Assembly Speaker Th Lokeshwar said the House has decided to put up the matter before the Committee on Privilege & Ethics to take action against Babloo and the editor of the TV channel.
