WTR destroys opium worth Rs 6.75 lakhs

In line with its stand of prohibiting illicit poppy cultivation and opium trade in Ukhrul and Kamjong district, the Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR) of GPRN seized and destroyed 45 soap cases of opium in Ukhrul.
According to the WTR Officer, the cadres while Conducting their routine frisking, intercepted two persons and confiscated 45 soap cases of opium worth Rs 6,75,000 from their possession yesterday at Ngari Bridge Phaibung areas which is between the border of Senapati and Ukhrul district.
The seized opium was disposed of today at WTR Office Harkuikathe Ukhrul in the presence of local civil society organizations (CSOs) leaders including Tangkhul Youth League president Themaso Tallanao.
It may be noted that the Ngari bridge is about 65 kms away from Ukhrul town.
Meanwhile, the convener of WTR, Law & Order Ukhrul Leiyaza informed that Wung Tangkhul Region will not tolerate illicit drug trafficking of any kind in Tangkhul regions.
According to him, WTR has carried out extensive poppy destruction drive in Tangkhul villages and has destroyed hundreds of acres of poppy farmland in Khamasom, Sinakeithei and Tangkhul Hundung village.
He further mentioned that WTR will initiate serious actions against those individuals indulging in such destructive business activities.
Poppy destruction drives will continue until total eradication of illegal cultivation is accomplished and any person caught in drug trade would be penalised as per the law of the land, he added.
