Imphal, October 21 2018: Even though the number of people from North East region working in foreign countries/overseas is enormous, the region is still to have even a single Recruiting Agent (RA) registered with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, informed Programme Officer (ICPS) of Social Welfare Department, Mala Lisham.

She also expressed strong apprehension that there may also be many uninformed or unaware victims of flesh trade and human trafficking from Manipur and other States of the North East region, as the people of the region usually travel to foreign countries in search for jobs through unregistered RAs or unauthorized people.

Mala Lisham was speaking as a resource person during the technical session of a two day State level workshop on "Prevention of Trafficking of Girls for Commercial Sexual Exploitation in Hill Districts of Manipur", which commenced at Manipur Press Club today, under the aegis of The Good Samaritans.

Stating that the North East States report high number of human trafficking cases every year, particularly of girl children and women, Mala urged all the parents, community leaders and CSOs to authenticate the agents or individuals who offer job opportunities in foreign countries or in other States before they send their children.

She underscored the importance of following legitimate procedures/processes if someone plans to work overseas and asked all to be aware of the fact that a no objection or clearance paper will be issued by the Protector General of Emigrants (PGE) whenever a registered recruiting agency recruits Indian citizens for employment in foreign countries.

The inaugural function of the workshop was graced by IMC Deputy Mayor Sujata Phaomei, The Good Samaritans president Star Kamei, Kabui Mothers Association president K Atongpi and NS Associate Project Consultant Nando Soibam as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
