Imphal, November 20 2011:
Questioning whether depriving the livelihood of the poor fishermen dwelling on Phumdis is the sign of developing Loktak lake, Thanga Heisnam Ngamee Shinmee Kanba Lup has expressed strong reservation against the government's drive of burning down the floating huts of the fishermen.
In a statement made available to the press, Secretary of the Lup Sharatchandra asserted that it is not the Chief Minister's bungalow at Imphal but the historic Loktak lake and Keibul Lamjao National Park which introduced Manipur to the outside world.
The government should understand this fact and take up necessary remedial measures for the damages caused so far through an understanding with the affected fishermen at the earliest possible.
Earlier, LDA had removed the Atha-phum (artificially grown Phumdis) of the fishermen even before payment of compensation and now the state government has burnt down the huts of the fishermen, Sharatchandra lamented.
