Following an assurance from the Chief Minister, the fast unto death agitation launched by the two leaders of Manipur Proletariat People's Democratic Union (MPPDU) and Socialist Students' Union of Manipur (SSUM) has been called off temporarily.
MPPDU president Nameirakpam Meghachandra and SSUM president Naorem Tanoranjan had launched a fast unto death agitation from November 16 demanding protection of indigenous people of the State.
A representative of the two unions met Chief Minister Biren today evening wherein the later gave an assurance that the demand will be looked into.
Addressing newspersons at SSUM's office at Keishampat after the meeting with the CM, Tanoranjan said that a memorandum was submitted to the CM during the meeting.
He said that the CM was urged to pass an unanimous Bill to protect the indigenous people from various potential threats.
Although the unions decided to suspend the fast unto death stir, other forms of agitation in pursuit of the demand will continue, he said.
He informed that a public meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss future course of action.
He also demanded criminal cases be filed against those officials who deprive distribution of Public Distribution System items at subsidised rate to the public.
