Imphal, July 17 2024:
'Chief Minister's Yarn Scheme' launched by chief minister N Biren in a mega event at City Convention Centre on July 11 will be able to provide yarn at cheaper rate to weavers.
The scheme was launched with the main objective of easing problems faced by weavers in purchasing yarn as businessmen sell yarn at prices fixed by them and there is no specific rate for the same by private yarn mills.
In view of difficulties faced by weavers particularly in purchasing yarn, the state government launched the 'Chief Minister's Yarn Scheme' .
As per the National Handloom Census report of 2019, Manipur has 2.13 lakh weavers and 2.11 lakh looms with healthy concentration of weavers compared to other states.
Though handloom has been a part of the tradition, weavers of Manipur are still unable to get yarn at cheap prices as yarns produced from private spinning mills are being sold at prices fixed by businessmen thereby forcing state weavers to purchase yarn at exorbitant rates.
E Jiten, who is general manager of Manipur Handloom & Handicraft Development Corporation (MHHDC), the implementing agency of the 'Chief Minister's Yarn Scheme', informed The People's Chronicle that the government introduced Yarn scheme in 2017 considering the problems faced by weavers in purchasing yarn.
Under the scheme, weavers were provided yarn at cheap prices but the scheme was discontinued in March, 2022 .
However, the earlier scheme has been modified for the convenience of weavers and introduced newly as 'Chief Minister's Yarn Scheme' which will be effective till the financial year 2028-29.According to E Jiten, the main objective of 'Chief Minister's Yarn Scheme' is to provide yarn to weavers timely and at cheap prices so that weavers could increase their production with more quality and earn more profit.
Under the scheme, weavers possessing photo ID and yarn passbooks issued by the governments of India and Manipur will get 15 percent discount on purchase of cotton, woollen and silk yarn and 20 percent discount on purchase of acrylic, polyester and viscose yarn.
