Imphal, July 13 2021:
Congress party on Tuesday carried out protest demonstration against the hike in the prices of petroleum products.
The protest staged in front of an oil pump (Yumnam Oil Service) at Wabagai Lamkhai in Kakching district was organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in association Kakching District Youth Congress.
The protesters raised various slogans against BJP governments at the Centre as well as in the state, denouncing the ever increasing prices of diesel and petrol.
Later, the police dispersed the protesters.
They also demanded roll back of the prices while alleging that the BJP government hiked the prices of the diesel and petrol despite sharp reduction in the price of the crude oil in the international market.
The protesters also displayed placards that read as "BJP government, don't kill people by price hike", "Down, down anti-people economic policy of BJP government", "Modi's Achhe Din becomes a burden for all (India)", etc.
However, police who arrived at the protest site dispersed the agitators saying that they were defying curfew to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the district.
Besides mass gathering is not permitted, they explained.
Taking part in the protest, MPYC general secretary Pukhrambam Bamkimchan-dra contended that when the crude price is at an alltime low in the international market, the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas have been skyrocketing in the country and state.
The Congress leader then said, "Keeping aside the voices against the price hike, the government keeps hiking the prices.
By doing so, now the price of petrol per litre has crossed Rs 105".He also said that the hike in the prices of transport fuel was unreasonable, while alleging that it is nothing but the BJP government "looting" the poor people of the country.
The Congress leader then demanded the government a roll-back of the prices of fuel while saying that the incessant hike in fuel prices is an additional burden to the common people.
He also said that while COVID-19 restrictions put the common people at the limit of their woes, a drought like situation has added to the burden to the farmers of the state.
