'Increasing lack of basic needs of human beings has been a cause for various crimes in the society', said Babloo Loitongbam, Executive Director of Human Rights Alert while speaking as resource person at a one-day public meeting on crimes against women and children organised by Women Actions For Development (WAD) Manipur in collaboration with Meira Paibi groups and other organizations of Khangabok area at Khullakpam Leikai Eigya Lala Mandop in Khangabok-I of Thoubal district today.

Earlier, the security forces resorted to arrest and carry out atrocities on common people.
However, with people's movement leading to intervention of the Supreme Court, such crimes have apparently decreased to a great extent, Babloo stated.
Responding to the call of the aggrieved people, the Supreme court instituted a high level commission to investigate into the crimes perpetrated by the security forces and has now realised the extreme criminality of the security forces, he added.
On the other hand, crimes against women and children have drastically increased during the last few years, due to non-availability of basic needs of human beings in the society, he said, while alleging that the development schemes meant for the welfare of the general public have been hijacked by a few powerful people for their personal well-being, thereby rendering the people poor.
Accordingly, people are using various means to earn their basic needs while the weak and helpless are becoming the victims in the process.
Babloo also stressed on the need for a mass movement against the crimes perpetrated against women and children.
Pointing out the need to curb increasing acts of violence against women, murders, rapes and human trafficking in the society, Joshila Devi, Project Co-ordinator of WAD, said that her organisation has been organising such programmes at various places of the state to bring awareness among the people.
