MHRC celebrates International Day of Families

The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) today celebrated International Day of Families on the theme, "Duty of the family towards welfare of the parents and senior citizens" at the Auditorium of Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal.
It was attended by Justice UB Saha, Chairperson, MHRC; Prof Dr Naorem Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University; Kangjam Khagendra Singh, Member, MHRC; Dr Yumnam Premananda Singh, Head, Department of Law, Manipur University; Ngangom Uttamkumar, Director, Social Welfare Department; Mamata Wahengbam, Inspector General of Police; Haobam Roshita, Secretary, MHRC and Dr S Ingotombi, retired Associate Professor, DM College of Science, Imphal among' others.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice UB Saha said that many Acts have been enacted to provide more effective provision for maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens.
He also elaborated on the need to make the people aware about the Acts enacted for the welfare of senior citizens and added that the Social Welfare Department should make efforts to spread awareness about the Acts and monitor Old Age Homes.

Justice UB Saha called for concerted effort of every stakeholder to make sure senior citizens live a healthy life and age gracefully & purposefully apart from dependent on Government assistance or intervention.
Ngangom Uttamkumar also enlightened the gathering about the "Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007" .
Students of Department of Law, Manipur University, senior citizens staying in Old Age Homes, Police personnel, CSOs and Meira Paibis also took part in the programme.
