Imphal, January 08 2025:
A team led by Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) members Md Habibur Rahman and Chabungbam Anita, on Wednesday visited the relief camp opened at Mekola Higher Secondary School, following Tuesday's suicide of a 20-year-old female resident Sukham Chanu, from Singhat in Churachandpur district.
In a release, MCPCR programme officer Sumel Yumnam informed that the team assessed the living conditions of women and children in the camp, while expressing grave concern over the increasing trend of suicides among relief camp residents in the state.
According to MCPCR, the prolonged stay for over 19 months in relief camps has left many residents struggling with depression, fuelled by feelings of insecurity, hopelessness, and a monotonous lifestyle.
"This mental strain, combined with the harsh realities of camp life, could have pushed some individuals to take drastic steps," it observed.
The Commission emphasised the urgent need for coordinated actions to address the crisis, and suggested measures including providing psychosocial support, imparting life skills and livelihood education, and improving the overall living conditions in relief camps.
Such efforts are seen as essential to safeguarding the mental health and well-being of inmates and preventing further loss of life, it added.
