Imphal, March 07 2012:
Although the verdict of the people in the elections to the 10th Manipur State Assembly was appreciable, the results obtained from the EVMs are not trustworthy at all, Dr M Nara, Secretary, CPI, Manipur State Unit has maintained.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Dr M Nara asserted that even candidates, who were not trusted by the people or by their own parties, surprisingly came out successful.
This is far from normal and needs to be looked into seriously.
"We also need to ponder over why developed countries do not use EVMs but insist on ballot papers.
These countries are in no way incapable of going for the EVMs.
As such the party in the state will try its level best in pressing the authorities concerned for using ballot papers instead of EVMs in elections in future", Dr Nara said.
Pointing out that all the big faces of CPI have failed in the election while those not even trusted by their parties have come up successful, Dr Nara observed that as such there is strong apprehension that something was wrong in the EVMs.
"This error can be detected in no time and the party will leave no stone unturned in finding out the errors", he said.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also pointed out that since the EVMs were kept in the strong room for a quite a long time, the degree of trust one can have on the election results coming out from these EVMs is questionable.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Shantikumar Sharma, President, BJP, Manipur Pradesh said that even though there are no proof regarding misuse of EVMs yet there are apprehensions that they could have been tampered.
So, in future, ballot papers should be used in elections and not EVMs.
He also pointed out that use of ballot papers is in practice in developed countries such as Russia, China and America because the people do not have trust on EVMs.
There is always room for misusing EVMs.
