Senior scribes feted on Press Club Day

Chief Minister N Biren Singh felicitated the founder members of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) on the occasion of the 47th Foundation Day Celebration of Manipur Press Club here on Thursday.
Speaking as chief guest of the celebration, N Biren noted that journalists join the profession with a sense of nationalism to serve the people and they occupy a very special place in the society.
Expressing satisfaction on the role played by the media, the CM stated that the media is crucial in disseminating information about the activities taken up by his government for the welfare of the state.
Regarding rechristening of Thangal Bazar Road as Mall Road, Biren maintained that the decision was taken after considering the sentiment of the people.
He said that during thelast four years, people witnessed tremendous changes in hill areas in different sectors like road connectivity, drinking water etc., and added that all these would not have been possible without the support of media fraternity.
He then appealed to the journalists to discuss the current scenario of the state so as to find out who is real friend and enemy of the state.
Further, he urged prominent media Houses to analyse to which the state is heading.
The CM also assured of installing a lift at Manipur Press Club to facilitate movement of elderly people, while further suggesting covering of all journalists under the government's journalist pension scheme and providing them health cards as well.
In his speech, AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai observed that the media is facing a lot of difficulties as the state is still classified as a conflict zone.
So far, 7 journalists have been shot dead in the state but justice is yet to be served.
Nonetheless, the journalists are continuously working hard despite the professional hazards.
In addition, the Union is proud of the many women journalists in the state, he remarked.
Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, who attended the function as a guest of honour, also highlighted the significant role played by media, especially in a state like Manipur, which is inhabited by many different communities.
As part of the programme, five elderly journalists, who were the founder members of AMWJU namely Y Orjit, PR Shyam, L Iboyaima, N Krishnamohon and L Sharatchandra Sharma, were felicitated by the CM with presentation of cash incentive of Rs 10,000 each as New Year gift.
Amongst others, Editors' Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram also attended the function as a guest of honour.
