CNPO erects monolith to celebrate Naga heritage

A monolith symbolising the unity, heritage, and identity of the Naga tribes in Chandel district was unveiled on Friday at Liwa Sarei village by the Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO).
The structure highlights the ancestral connection of the Nagas to Chandel and acknowledges the district's 11 Naga tribes, such as Aimol, Anal, Chothe, Khoibu, Kom, Lamkang, Maring, Monsang, Moyon, Tangkhul (Associate Member), and Tarao.
The CNPO described the monolith as a symbol of resilience and resistance, reflecting the determination of the Naga people to preserve their cultural heritage despite historical challenges.
Unveiled by Chandel MLA Olish Ss Lamkang, the monolith is engraved with a message promoting identity, integrity; unity, solidarity, peace, and a shared vision for prosperity and coexistence.
It underscores the unique history of the Nagas and their ancestral homeland.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Olish called for fostering brotherly love among the Naga tribes in Chandel and urged all to make collaborative efforts to develop the district.
She emphasised the importance of tribal unity under the leadership of respective tribal bodies.
Former MLA and ex-CNPO president, St Victor Nunghlung, echoed the call for unity and protection of ancestral lands.
He noted the geographic spread of Chandel and reminded the Nagas of their roots despite urban migration.
The event also witnessed the release of a souvenir and memento by UNC president Ng Lorho.
The monolith was blessed and dedicated by Chandel Naga Christian Forum (CNCF) president reverend Shonnai Saka.
Cultural performances added vibrancy to the event, featuring traditional dances like the Kom Naga dance and Maring Naga War dance, along with melodies performed by Wng Warnihring Anal and Sk Tabitha Lamkang.
Former CNPO president Ng Gilbert Monsang, tribal leaders, CSOs, and student representatives also attended the event.
