World Environment Day observed widely in State

As in other parts of the world, World Environment Day was observed by Directorate of Environment, Government of Manipur on the theme �Small Island Developing States in the Border Context of Climate Change' at the auditorium of MFDC, Palace Compound here yesterday.
The observance was attended by Nikhilesh Jha, Additional Chief Secretary of Forests & Environment as Chief Guest; Dr M Homeshwor, Director of Directorate of Environment as President while Prof N Rajmuhon, member of SEIAA; Dr H Nandiram, chairman of SEAC and G Tomba, member of SEAC as Guests of Honor.
Speaking on the occasion, Nikhilesh Jha stated that the observance of World Environment Day started from the year 1972 under United Nation General Assembly with the objective to save human environment of the world and noted that the unprecedented rise in temperature in the State is the result of changes in environmental condition.
He said that the topic of environment should be incorporated in curriculum of schools in the State so as to educate students about importance of environment and its needs in human life.
Asserting that rampant cutting of trees in order to expand roads has been one of the factors in rising temperature of a place, he pointed out that the State Government should come up with measures to save natural resources from destruction.
During the function, 60 percent of the first installment fund sanctioned by Ministry of Environment & Forest for organizing National Environmental Awareness Campaign was handed over to several NGOs in the form of cheques.
As part of the programme, a team of 15 people who are going to travel to different districts of the State carrying the message of world environment was also was also flagged off.
Meanwhile, All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen Union in collaboration with PRDA; Indigenous Perspectives; NEPA; AMUCO; NIPCO; ACOAM Lup; CORE; ACTIP and HERICOUN jointly observed the World Environment Day at Langol Shabi Loktak with Mutum Churamani, president of HERICOUN; Phulindro Konsam, chairman of CORE; Salam Leinungsi, member of ALLAFUM Women Wing and Somerendro, president of ACOAM Lup attending as Presidium Members.
The World Environment Day was also observed jointly by Biodiversity Ecology & Environment Network and Centre for Guidance on Higher Studies at Johnstone Higher Secondary School.
