Scribe Assault: SI suspended, AMWJU plans further discussion

Imphal, August 03 2024: The Superintendent of Police, Imphal East district, has ordered immediate suspension of Sub-Inspector Sh Nikhil Singh for assaulting a journalist who was covering a protest rally taken out by displaced people staying at Akampat relief camp on Thursday.

The suspension follows allegations of grave misconduct, deemed unacceptable for a member of the police force.

During the suspension period, SI Nikhil will be stationed at the Reserve Line, Porompat, and is required to seek prior permission before leaving his headquarters.

The suspension will remain in effect until further notice, as a disciplinary proceeding is contemplated against him.

Meanwhile, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) held an emergency General Body meeting on Saturday to address issue.

Acknowledging the suspension of the police SI, AMWJU, in a statement, informed that key resolutions from the meeting will be discussed further as the union monitors the evolving situation.

AMWJU will continue to follow up on this case and discuss subsequent development in future meetings, the statement added.
