Man dies in alleged police torture

Imphal, May 02 2022:
A man, who was picked from his residence by Imphal Police Station on the alleged charge of not returning borrowed gold and allowed to return home after some hours in the police custody, reportedly collapsed and passed away in a hospital.
The deceased man has been identified as Arambam Nanao (37) s/o (L) Dhananjoy of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai.
According to a police report, Nanao collapsed at his home after returning from the police station.
He was immediately taken to RIMS hospital wherein he was pronounced dead, thus leading his family members to explode in anger.
The family further urged the authority concerned to take strict action against the cop involved namely sub-inspector Thokchom Jeetendra.
Speaking in this regard, Nanao's aunt Arambam ongbi Lata recounted that her nephew was picked up by some people in civvies on Monday.
The family frantically searched for him and only came to know that those who took away Nanao was actually police personnel after were summoned via telephone by SI Jeetendra to Imphal PS.
Immediately, the family went to Imphal PS, wherein the SI told them to either arrange money and gold or Nanao will be sent to jail.
The family were in the midst of preparing the money/gold, when a team led by SI Jeetendra himself brought Nanao back home.
The SI went on to threaten Nanao to produce the gold but Nanao suddenly fainted.
The police team helped take Nanao to RIMS but he was pronounced dead soon after, she recalled.
While contending that many bruises could be observed on Nanao's body, Lata expressed strong suspicion that SI Jeetendra could have brutally thrashed her nephew before bringing him home.
As such, she urged for strict action to be taken against those who are using the police as recovery agents and also against SI Jeetendra.
Nanao's body is being kept at RIMS morgue for post mortem examination.
On the other hand, after receiving news of his death, Nanao's wife Terasu (40) who is currently nursing their 40-day old baby, also lost consciousness and was taken to RIMS hospital.
