Speaking on the occasion, Prof Khagendra said that the world has now been termed as a "global village" where there is constant interaction among different people belonging to different regions and ethnicity.
The need for language translation lies in the backdrop of such global development.
Important literary works should be translated into many languages so that the essence of good literature can be imparted all across the globe transgressing the barriers of language.
Delivering the presidential speech, Prof Jodhachandra said that there is a big chasm between Meeteis and Tangkhuls.
However, the gap can be narrowed down if the literary works of both the communities are translated into each other's language for better mutual understanding.
The State Government should also adopt a policy to encourage translation of good literary works into the languages and dialects of the State.
Translation is becoming easy with technological advancement.
In some five-star hotels aboard, replies of enquiries made to the reception counter can be obtained in any desired language through a computerized translation system.
The importance of literary translation should also be known by all, he added.
