Strike wraps up peacefully

Imphal, March 31 2012:
The 12-hour general strike called by Maoist Communist Party (MCP), Manipur over the death of two handymen of a stationary bus which was set on fire by some miscreants in the intervening night of March 26 and 27, affected normal life in the state.
But by and large, the general strike which was called from 5 am to 5 pm passed off peacefully without any untoward incidents.
On account of the strike, market places wore a deserted look with all shops and other business establishments remaining shut for the day.
Normal functioning of educational institutions, banks and other government offices also affected due to the strike.
Inter-state and inter-district transportation was also severely affected as buses, vans, autos remained off the road.
Only few private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads.
MCP called the general strike in condemnation over the death of two young handymen, Ningthoujam Mangal alias Naoba, 18, s/o N.Shanti of Wangoi Laiphakpam, Thoubal district and Abung alias Boy, 19, of Singhat, Churachandpur district, who were sleeping in the ill feted bus owned by one Adhikarimayum Dhanabir of Keisampat Leimajam Leikai when it was set on fire.
The bus was operating service between Imphal and Churachandpur.
