CM inspects Pony Sanctuary
More sanctuaries to be developed as tourist centres: Ibobi

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi today inspected the development works of Pony Sanctuary located at Heingang Pat in the vicinity of Ibudhou Marjing Ching.
During the inspection, Ibobi was accompanied by Speaker Th Lokeshwar, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam and MLA N Biren along with the foreign polo players and representatives of Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, All Manipur Polo Association and Manipuri Pony Society.
Talking to media persons after the inspecting the development works of Pony Sanctuary, Chief Minister Ibobi said that Manipuri Pony is a rare variety of equine found only in the State.
The State Government is striving to preserve such symbolic animal which has been associated with the game of polo in the State.
The sanctuary would be dedicated to the people after completion, he noted.

He further maintained that the polo originated from the State and later it got popularized in so many other countries.
Manipur Polo International is being organized as a part of the Sangai Festival with the objective to promote the game and save the Manipuri Pony.
Ibobi clarified that no land for the sanctuary has been acquired forcibly from the land pattadars.
The Government is keen to complete the sanctuary within a short period.
Necessary procedures for allocation of required funds have also been taken, he added.
The Chief Minister also stated that more pony sanctuaries would be set up at Kheba Ching, Khongjom and some other important places to serve as tourist centres as well.
He also appealed to the people to render utmost support to the Government in establishing such sanctuaries to raise the number of Manipur Ponies from the present population of about 700 .
Later, the Chief Minister and his entourage also inspected the development works at Pangei which are undertaken as part of Heingang Pony Sanctuary.
