Tourism can help in poverty eradication: Biswajit

Commerce and Industry Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh has asserted that sustainable tourism will help in the Government's initiative to eradicate poverty in the State .
He was speaking at the World Tourism Day observation at the Manipur University Courthall today .
Elaborating further, Minister Biswajit said that sustainable tourism will enhance our economy and at the same time bring positive social impacts.
Manipur has a lot of tourism potentials.
The Centre has released funds for development of tourism sector in the State, he added .
He observed that despite of the vast natural resources available in the State, we are unable to explore the resource and use them for our own good.
We need to explore and utilize the resources, he maintained .
He also emphasised on the need to explore the resources available under the agro sector, and market the vast production of pineapple, lemon, chilli etc to the outside world .
The Act East Policy aims at bringing a positive impact on the State and its economy, however, we need to be well planned to reap its benefits, he continued .
The Minister exhorted the students to be hardworking and responsible towards the good of the society .
As part of the observation, prizes were distributed to winners of the on the spot painting competition, open essay writing competition on the topic "Tourism in Manipur for Sustainable Development."
The observance function was organized by the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development School of Social Sciences, Manipur University in collaboration with the Manipur Tourism Forum, Imphal under the theme "Sustainable Tourism a Tool for Development."
Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, School of Social Sciences, MU Dean Prof N Lokendro Singh, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development School of Social Sciences, MU, Director Prof Ch Ibohal Meitei attended the function .
Several resource persons spoke at the occasion.
