Churchandpur, November 26 2021:
A rally under the theme "Respect Democracy" was organised to mark the Constitution Day in Churchandpur district on Friday.
The rally aimed at spreading awareness to strengthen democracy was led by youth icon Dr George T Haokip, intending candidate from 59 Saikot (ST) assembly constituency.
The rally was flagged off by a differently abled person Romeo Haokip from Peace Ground in Churachandpur at 11 am.
About 450 cars, autos and other taxis joined the rally which covered different roads, junctions and villages in the tribal hill district.
Some of the banners read Exercise your right to vote', 'Respect democracy and the rule of law', 'Refused to be silenced', and Respect for human rights is an opportunity for transformative change in people's live'.
Dr George T Haokip, while speaking to the audience at Peace Ground, said, "Today, we must unite to ensure our democratic principles and values are respected and defended by the people to achieve the ideal of democracy.
Attacking the Congress party, he said, "In democracy, power is vested with the people.
It is opposed to dynastic rule.
Unfortunately, Congress ruled this country on its own for 44 years and in alliance with others for 10 years.
No other accept Gandhi family controls the party".
"With the coming of BJP both at the centre and in the state, democratic principles and values have started taking their roots.
However, in some constituencies, development rights of the people are still being denied.
Today our movement for change under the slogan 'Shining Saikot' is like a 'sea wave' that will wipe out Congress rule in this constituency.
It was during Congress rule in the state that reign of terror was unleashed.
Everyone knows this.
At least someone of our relatives or friends died of fake encounter or extra judicial killing every few week," he said.
Hans Thangboi, convenor of the rally, said, "The rally aims at giving awareness to the masses to respect democratic values, rights of the citizen, free and fair election and human rights".
The rally disrupted traffic movement for over than three hours.
No report of untoward incident, however, occurred during the rally.
