Number of vehicles rise dramatically in state: District Transport Officer, Imphal West

Manipur in the recent years witnessed a sudden increase in the number of vehicles ranging from two wheelers to cars and auto rickshaws.
Taking serious note of the matter, District Transport Officer, Imphal West M Mani has pointed out that unless the people do not have proper knowledge of road traffic and follow them, road related mishaps would be on the rise in the state.
He pointed out that the number of two-wheelers in Manipur in 2009 was 1,08,169 two wheelers.
But by the end of 2011, the figure has risen to 1,34,910, thus indicating an increase of 26,741 new two wheeler vehicles in the intervening two years.
As for cars, the number of cars in Manipur at the end of 2009 was 15,749 but the number has increased to 18,619 by the end of 2011 .
Similarly, the number of autorikshaws by the end of 2009 was 4344 and it has increased to 9364 by the end of 2011 .
Likewise, the number of trucks has increased to 11,246 from 9854 .
However, number of buses decreased by 34 buses from previous 2094 to 2056.Mini Bus witnessed an increase of 5 from previous figure of 666 to 671.Number of Jeeps also witnessed an increase from 10,194 to 11,901, taxi from 585 to 1716 and tractors from 1759 to 2576, the DTO informed.
The DTO noted that the there is significant increase in the number of two wheelers in the state every time after the results of Class 10 and 12 exams are out.
This shows that the parents persuaded and inspired their children to study hard with assurance of buying two wheelers, thereby leading to dramatic increase in the number of two wheelers in the state.
Unfortunately, some parents even sold their agricultural fields to buy motorbikes for their children and in some cases young people commit suicide while pressing their parents to buy motorbikes for them, the transport officer added.
