Imphal, November 22 2011:
Police personnel of Bishnupur and Moirang PS and VDF personnel who went in the Loktak Lake to remove the floating huts from the lake now faced threats from UG groups who are hiding in remote areas of the lake.
According to sources from the state police, the personnel entered Karang Charengbi, Mayang Imphal, eastern side of Yangoi Turel Maril, Komlakhong, Khordak and Changoubi areas to clear the huts.
However some UG cadres who were suspected to be cadres of KCP told the team not to enter the area over the telephone.
The source further stated that only about 130 huts are left out of the total of around 1100 huts.
The hut clearing team will enter the areas tomorrow with additional security personnel and continue the clearing.
Meanwhile, it may be mentioned that the steps of the state government and the Loktak Development Authority to clear the huts from the Loktak Lake which poses a threat to the sustainability of the lake is drawing serious flaks from various sections and citizens including the Asian Human Rights Commission.
On the other hand, in a bid to boost tourist inflow in the state the Loktak Development Authority will be developing Inland Waterways in the Loktak Lake (the largest freshwater lake in NE India) which is the main tourist attraction of the state.
The project will be carried out by the LDA under the instruction of the Inland Water Transport, Government of India.
LDA will be completing the required infrastructures development by next year.
The Inland Waterways will have three routes, four Jeties and three Terminal buildings and will connect Mayang Imphal, Thanga, Toubul and Ningthoukhong.
The Centre has already sanctioned Rs 58,89,639 (40 % of the total amount) to the LDA for developing the infrastructures.
Terminal buildings are being constructed at Ningthou-khong and Thanga areas.
Besides, the state government had urged the Centre to connect Karang, Komlakhong and Phubala also by the waterways.
