Nationwide strike in total in state

Imphal, September 20 2012:
The Nationwide dawn-to-dusk general strike called by Left and Right parties against the UPA government's decision on diesel price, LPG cylinders and FDI in multi-brand retail was in total in Manipur.
As in other parts of the country, all the market places in Manipur remained shut and vehicular traffic stayed off the roads, thus presenting a deserted look.
All the educational institutes also remained closed down doe the day and attendance in government offices was reported to be thin.
Flight service in the state was also affected on account of the general strike.
As a part of the general strike, leaders of CPI, CPI(M), MPP, JD(S), JD(U), NPP, AISB and different trade unions of the state organized a massive rally from CPI head office at Rupmahal Tank.

The rallyists shouted slogans like "decrease diesel price immediately", "provide LPG cylinders adequately" and "revoke inclusion of FDI in multi-brand retail" and proceeded upto the Western Kangla Gate.
From there, they turned towards Johnstone School and tried to pass through three Ima Keithels.
However, the rallyists were stopped from proceeding further by the personnel of City Police Station.
The rallyists later reassembled at CPI office where a public meeting was held.
Speakers at the meeting expressed their gratitude to the people of the state for their support and cooperation in making the general strike a success.
The meeting was attended by Dr M Nara, CPI, State Secretary; Sanasam Umananda, President of MPP; M Tombi, President of JD(U); Manihar Goshwami, Working President, JD(S); Kh Gyaneshwar, State Secretary, AIFB; Sarat Salam, CPI(M), State Secretary as presidium members.
