Imphal, January 20 2013 :
The decision to abolish Special Investigation Unit (SIU) by the State Government, just four days after a huge consignment of drugs worth Rs 1.5 crores was seized from Imphal Airport, is a clear sign that both the State Government and the Airport authority are engaged in smuggling of drugs into the State, Information Centre for Hill Areas, Manipur (ICHAM) has alleged.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club today, N Rajendro, President of ICHAM, stated that SIU was established on May, 6, 2012.During the nine months of its existence, SIU had been able to seize drugs which were worth more than 10 crores.
So, abolishing such a worthy unit, which was set up for the welfare of the State, clearly indicated who the real drug smugglers are.
Moreover, instead of rewarding him for his great achievement, Inspector Ranjit who led the SIU team has been transferred from his post and his rank even reduced just a day after the seizure of the drug consignment send from outside through Air Deccan cargo flight.
And three days after the transfer of Inspector Ranjit, an order was issued by SP of Imphal West K Jayanta to announce abolition of SIU with immediate effect and disbandment of its personnel as well as other staffs.
This act of the State Government clearly indicates that the Government and the Airport authority are both engaged in smuggling of drugs into the State, he further alleged.
So, the State Govt and the Airport authority should clarify over why Inspector Ranjit was transferred and SIU abolished, he demanded.
It may be noted here that Home Minister Gaikhangam has claimed that he knew nothing about aolition of SIU.
