Imphal, November 18 2015:
Manipur Government's efforts on renovating and beautifying the Kangla moat in the heart of Imphal City is likely to turn into an unpleasant sight for domestic and international tourists during the 10-day long Sangai Festival which begins on November 21 .
The frantic effort to spruce up and enliven the seat of power of the erstwhile independent nation as it stands now started from the month of September.
It was earlier aimed at not only beautifying the location but also conserving the heritage site of the State.
The tasks were allotted to five special contractors and they started the stone-pitching at the northern, western and southern parts of the Kangla moat.
After most of the stone-pitching works were executed, the earth from the moat was dumped inside the Kangla.
The excavated earth and assorted mud and slush are dumped at a place where vehicles were parked before after entering Kangla from the southern gate.
The earth, soil and mud have also been dumped in the areas under the bio-diversity park on the western flank of the Kangla.
The excavated earth is being loaded onto trippers before taking them at the dumping sites.
The roads surrounding Kangla is now filled with excavated earth, mud, slush and dust.
The view as it stands now may be the first sight of thousand tourists visiting the Sangai Festival, said an observer.
Another onlooker observed, "Tourists coming to visit the Kangla will be embarrassed to find such unpleasant site and the Government is also unlikely to complete the renovation work before the Sangai Festival begins" .
With much work needed to be done, the beautification process is likely to dishearten the citizens who are proud of their heritage.
As of now, they can only wait and watch the reactions of the tourists who will visit the Kangla, the seat of erstwhile Manipur's independent past.
