Imphal, July 17 2022:
While pointing out that several private universities from other states had duped Manipuri students under the pretext of providing various facilities and made them enrol into their college and university instead, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) cautioned students from such fallacious colleges.
Addressing a press meet organised jointly by AMSU and Karbi Students' Association (KSA), Assam at AMSU head office on Sunday, AMSU vice president Laishram Athouba Meitei reminded that there were numerous cases where private university and colleges published advertisement promising scholarships and other facilities which impressed many students from the north-eastern states to admit in such institutions only to be deprived of the assured packages and facilities creating serious problems for them.
While stating that AMSU has started examining the matter, he urged students and guardians to be cautious from such deceitful institutes and further exhorted to minutely examine the universities before seeking admission.
If there is any problem in accessing information about the universities or colleges, than AMSU external affairs secretary may be contacted, Athouba said and also assured all possible assistance from the Union.
Athouba urged the people to extend support and cooperation in the initiative taken up by the students' body.
According to KSA, Assam president Thangsing Timung, agents of different universities from various states came to North East and assured of providing several benefits to the students, however, their assurances were never translated into action.
In 2015, agencies of some universities organised counselling in Karbi Anglong and enrolled students to the institutes.
They assured of providing national scholarship to tribal students and added that the scholarship will be utilised as course fee of the students.
However, after enrolment into these institutes, the students were deprived of the assured scholarships, thus causing serious issues for the students.
Even some students dropped out of the college as they could not give fees regarding their course, he remarked.
While stating that there are reports of similar cases in Manipur where representatives of universities from different states duped the students, Thangsing pointed out that it is a big issue for the students and cautioned that such fraudulent acts of the universities will deprive students of their education.
He further appealed not to let such fraudulent acts happen not only in the state but in North East also so as to save future of students.
