Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai has said that at least three gates of Ithai Barrage have been kept open as water level in many of the rivers has risen due to ceaseless rainfall.
Speaking to the media at Sangaithel today, the Minister continued that the Government decided to open the gates by consulting Ithai Barrage Management Authority so as to release the excess water and prevent flooding.
At least three gates of Ithai Barrage have been opened since yesterday, he added.
The Minister also mentioned that works have already been initiated in dangerous areas to prevent flooding even before the onset of the monsoon season.
Continuing that one hanging bridge over Jiri River has been swept away by the current of the water while many adjacent areas have been inundated, the Minister said that the State Government has started providing relief materials.
