'Knowing intrinsic values of classical languages crucial'

A three-day conference on the topic "Classical Language Status in respect of Manipuri Language" organised by Directorate of Language Planning & Implementation kicked-off today at the conference hall of Manipur State Guest House, Sanjenthong.
The inaugural function was graced by Art & Culture Minister Langpoklakpam Jayantakumar Singh as chief guest; Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam as president; language activist Leihaothabam Sharatchandra Sharma and Director (Art & Culture) Ng Uttam Singh as guests of honour.
Jayantakumar speaking at the occasion emphasised the importance of holding such conferences, observing that one needs to digest intrinsic values and components of classical languages.
He said that one should be familiar with the history of the society and valuable assets left behind by forefathers to understand one's own language.
He said that any language which is classical in nature may be termed as a classical language.
A classical language has its own history and tradition, he added.
He asserted that inclusion of Manipuri language in the classical language list is necessary for protecting and promoting the identity of Manipuris.
He said that it is the responsibility of every Manipuri to protect and preserve age-old Manipuri language.
Informing that Government of Maharashtra has been trying hard to get classical language status for Marathi language at the earliest, the Minister called upon the people to contribute towards the bid to place the call for inclusion of Manipuri language in the classical language list in the Parliament.
In this regard, an expert committee will be formed.
The committee would submit its reports to Art & Culture Department and Education Department after which a major policy will be framed, Jayantakumar said.
He also exhorted the people especially younger generation to promote Manipuri language, the rich art and culture of the State across the world.
The Minister assured that he will take a lead role in the process of attaining classical language status for Manipuri language for the sake of future generations.
Radheshyam made an observation that Manipuri language would face no difficulties in the attempt to include in the classical language list as the language has already been enlisted in the 8th Scheduled of the Indian Constitution.
He also called upon the people to take part in the movement for inclusion of Manipuri language in the classical language list.
He urged the participants and experts of the conference to share their views and suggestions on the topic.
