Education minister moots renaming 'MM' as 'Manipuri Eyek'

Imphal, September 14 2021: Education minister S Rajen has stated that the people of the state would be more enthusiastic to learn the Manipuri script if 'Meetei Mayek' is renamed as 'Manipuri Eyek' .

He made the statement during the celebration of Hindi Diwas organised by Hindi Teachers' Training Institute and Hindi Teachers' Training College at the premises of the Institute at DM College campus here on Tuesday.

Rajen said that Hindi is an important language of India and it would be beneficial for all to be fluent in the same.

Additionally, one should also strive to be familiar with other languages spoken across the country, he said and expressed wish to include the languages spoken by the tribal communities in the state in the school syllabus till the High School level.

Informing that the centre has sanctioned the first installment of Rs 18 crore for promotion of the state's official Manipuri Language and Meetei Mayek; the education minister further informed that the results of recruitment examinations for various primary and graduate posts will be announced in September.

Minister Rajen also said that Health and Education sectors need to be prioritised in order to establish a healthy nation.

If there is failure in health and education sector then the future generation will have no destiny, he said and stressed the importance of maintaining good health while pursuing academic goals.

He maintained that the education department has highest numbers of employees in the state but there are still several vacant posts of teachers and other staff.

The government is also giving priority to develop the education sector with launch of School Fagathansi Mission giving impetus towards achieving the goal, he said while revealing that in recent years the number of school drop-outs increased due to inability to afford fees in private schools.

It happened due to the public's trust deficit in government schools, the minister maintained and contended that registration of students in government schools increased tremendously during recent years.

Minister Rajen further assured to renovate the old building of the Hindi Teachers Training College and strengthen the teaching and no- teaching staff of the college through new recruitments.

SCERT joint secretary T Manihar Singh, HTTI Imphal principal L Gambhir Singh and HTTC Imphal principal Dr H Ibeyaima Devi attended the celebration as guest of honour and functional president respectively.
