Imphal, September 12 2024:
Churachandpur Doctors' Association (CDA) has issued a public notice regarding the deteriorating state of peace and tranquillity within the district, particularly highlighting the increasing incidents of violence affecting hospital environments and the security of healthcare workers.
In a notice signed by its president Dr N Thangginmang and general secretary Dr Zam Lian Mang Hatzaw, the CDA expressed grave concern over the adverse impact that disturbances in hospital premises have on the effective functioning of healthcare staff.
They pointed out that recent incidents have seen healthcare workers subjected to criminal intimidation and even physical harm.
Such actions, the CDA said, undermine the goodwill associated with the noble practice of caregiving and inflict trauma on healthcare professionals, thereby compromising their ability to perform their duties effectively and responsibly.
The association also highlighted several issues creating chaos in hospitals, including skirmishes involving the display of arms at the hospital campus, and attributed such violent incidents to unruly patients or their attendants and visitors.
The CDA emphasised the need for tranquillity within the hospital environment, and urged the public to recognise the detrimental effects of such violence on the healthcare system and on the performance of doctors and staff.
They also called for a complete cessation of violence and the exclusion of arms from hospital premises.
Additionally, CDA highlighted problem of intoxicant usage, stating that it significantly contributes to the disorder within hospital premises.
While acknowledging their limited capacity to tackle this issue on a broader societal level, the CDA urged the public to avoid using intoxicants within hospital grounds, explaining that individuals under the influence of such substances are more likely to cause disturbances and conflicts, further straining the already burdened healthcare system and negatively impacting the staff.
The notice also pointed out the broader implications of the ongoing violence in the state, which has already weakened the healthcare system.
The CDA implored the public not to exacerbate the situation with actions that disrupt peace and harmony, which are essential for the effective operation of healthcare services.
Furthermore, CDA highlighted the issue of overcrowding in district hospitals, which are currently saturated with patients beyond their manageable capacity.
They stressed that patients recover best in a peaceful environment and called for public cooperation to help maintain the calm and supportive atmosphere needed for the well-being of both patients and healthcare workers.
In their commitment to addressing these challenges, the CDA expressed their willingness to collaborate with the District Hospital administration in implementing measures to end unwarranted incidents within hospital premises and to promote a more effective healthcare system.
