Imphal, April 11 2022:
Following allegations that the police did not take up necessary action in connection with an election related incident, a Court has demanded a status report of the particular case.
Alleging that P Tongthang, chief campaigner of the BJP candidate of Singnat AC was brutally assaulted by a group of people led by KPA candidate Chinlunthang on February 28, the day of polling for the first phase of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election, one election agent of the BJP candidate lodged a complaint to the District Election Officer, Churachandpur and the SP, Churachandpur on the same day.
The incident reportedly happened at 60/10 MT Geltam police station which is located about 7 Kms to the North East of Singnat police station.
Acting on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Singnat police station.
The FIR described the incident as 'assault with attempt to murder' and invoked sections 351/307/34 IPC.
Even as the crime was said to be punishable under IPC sections 351/307/34, police did not take any further action and the matter finally reached the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, First Class, Churachandpur.
Subsequently, the Court directed Singnat police station to furnish status report of the particular FIR.
